Finding out what to charge for a house cleaning service is a nerve wracking experience.  I know, I've been there!  You have to get it 'just' right in order to make a tidy profit and also to show how professional you are.

House cleaning costs can vary enormously depending on what type of service you offer.  It depends if you are an independent cleaner, run an agency by hiring cleaners, or run a full-blown professional cleaning company.

For the purpose of this article I’m assuming you’re an independent cleaner, but the same principles will apply for house cleaning agencies and companies.

The best way to find out the going rate is for your type of service is to ring around the local cleaners in your Yellow Pages and find out what they are charging.

So for an independent cleaner you'll have to find the independent cleaners and ring those.  Independent cleaners charge the lowest rates, followed by agencies, then the house cleaning companies who charge the highest rates.

Then you'll have an idea of what to charge for house cleaning whether you decide to charge the same, undercut them or set your rates higher is up to you.

I've only ever seen independent cleaners charge an hourly rate.  It seems to be standard.  Agencies and professional companies tend to charge by 'the job' meaning each individual clean is priced accordingly.

Important!  Don’t Charge Too Cheap

Don't think that if you charge cheaper than your competitors then you'll get more customers.  It doesn't work that way.  Put it this way "cheap = tacky/shoddy".

There are various reasons why you should'nt charge your house cleaning rates cheap.

1. If you charge only $8 an hour, then the psychology of your potential customers will tell them you'll do a shoddy job;

2. You need to be making a healthy profit, you can't do that if you charge low prices;

3. Also realise that you will incur costs, whether it be transport, advertising or stock for cleaning products it will all have to come out of your hourly rate.

To put it finely, you have to cover your expenses and still make a healthy profit.
